What is the Difference between Counseling & Coaching

We are passionate about seeing people discover hope and grow on their healing journey in life. The goal of coaching is to help you identify places where you are stuck and how to overcome those issues. It tends to look at current situation to see places you are stuck then look at patterns or trauma to help you grow to a new tomorrow. While we may help you uncover your past trauma, it is for the purpose of helping you to overcome your current challenges. Coaches provide support, accountability, and guidance, helping clients move from where they are to where they want to be.

Counseling on the other hand tends to focus on mental health issues such as anxiety or depression. As coaches we do not diagnosis mental health issues, and if needed would refer you to your doctor or a local counselor for support with these issues.

We find that many individual, couples and relationship issues can be addressed by coaching.

Brad is a Marriage and Family Therapist, licensed in the state of Pennsylvania. He acts as a supervisor for our team of trained coaches who are not counselors. While Brad occasionally will offer counseling services online to people from Pennsylvania, the majority of what we do is coaching. Due to the nature of marriage coaching, insurance reimbursement is not available.

Yes! There are many things that you can do to improve your own understanding of challenges even if your spouse isn’t ready to join you yet. We do believe it is best if both of you are working toward your goals together, and so would encourage you to give a couple’s session a try if possible. This allows each of you to work on your own issues and really be challenged in the areas where you need to grow as a wife or husband. However, We know that there are times when one spouse isn’t ready to start coaching for a variety of reasons. In those circumstances we are happy to start work with one person with the goal of adding the other either to the same coach or one of our other coaches as soon as possible. While each situation is different, it is important that you recognize that change takes time. You can expect that coaching will last at least three months, and often longer.

There are a lot of factors that go into this decision including cost and availability. So there is not any one size fits all answer. However, what we normally advise is for you to plan to start weekly for about 6 weeks. This allows you time to feel like you are making progress and seeing changes. We can discuss shifting to bi-weekly or monthly as needed.

Yes, we have our podcast, Still Becoming One. Many of our coaches also have their own websites with wonderful information on them too, we have them and more on our coaches page.

As coaches we do not diagnose any mental health conditions. That is required to submit claims to your insurance company. So unfortunately we cannot take insurance.

We do however offer a sliding fee scale and we work with a number of churches who will help their congregation members to afford christian coaching.
